Groups charge a subscription (‘subs’) to cover the costs of equipment, badges and the upkeep of headquarters. Subs varies from Group to Group, but is usually £1 to £2 per week. Some Groups collect this weekly, or may collect monthly or even one payment for each term.
There is also the Scout Association’s annual membership fee, which includes a basic personal accident insurance for all members. Some groups may charge more subs and include the membership fee, while others may charge the membership fee seperately once a year.
An extra charge is normally made for special events, camps, and other activities and outings.
You will need a uniform for your son or daughter when they join. Uniforms cost from £10 for Beaver Scout sweatshirts, to £45 for an Explorer Scout Shirt and Activity Trousers. However, many Groups have a supply of uniforms which have been donated by members who have moved into the next section, which they lend out or pass on to new members. There are also grants available to help any parents who have difficulty in paying for uniforms. Ask your section leader for details. Please do not be put off by the price of the uniform. If you need assistance buying a uniform just ask a leader. Cost should NEVER be a barrier to anyone joining Scouts!
More information on what uniform you need and where to buy it can be found on the Parents Info - Uniform page.
Gift Aid
Some Groups operate the Gift Aid Scheme. If you pay tax, they can use Gift Aid to claim 28p for every £1.00 you give in subs or donations back from the Inland Revenue. All you need to do is sign a Gift Aid Declaration All the money will be used to benefit members of the Scout Group and helps keep the cost to parents lower.
