The other weekend, a close-knit bunch of Explorers from Elm Ridge ESU headed to Braithwaite campsite in the Western Lakes for a weekend full of adventure and exploration—pushing some of them out of their comfort zones.

Friday:
The evening was spent setting up camp and getting to know our bovine neighbors.

Saturday:
After a hearty breakfast of cereal and sausage butties (ketchup or brown sauce—still hotly debated!), the group headed to Go Ape at Whinlatter Forest for a morning of high-adrenaline treetop adventure. Chloe joined to see what was possible, and comfort zones were thoroughly tested—but everyone smashed it! They even encountered a potential unit mascot… who politely declined to branch out.

The afternoon brought free time in Keswick for some bargain hunting, while Leaders enjoyed a little peace! Back at camp, the Explorers helped gather fuel for the obligatory campfire, rounding off a fantastic day.

Sunday:
Up and awake bright and early, the team struck camp and refuelled on more sausage butties before heading to Derwentwater Marina. Sailing wasn’t an option due to a lack of consistent wind, so the Explorers teamed up in pairs for paddling adventures, honing their teamwork skills on the water.

Back on dry land, it was time to head home, with many Explorers gently rocked to sleep courtesy of Tony’s smooth driving—and even smoother classic tunes!

A massive thanks to Tia and Tony for helping make this camp happen, and to Richard Tricky and Anthony or towing our kit.
