The 12th Darlington Beaver Scouts recently marked World Down Syndrome Day (21st March) with a fun, engaging, and educational evening.
We were delighted to welcome Beth, who joined us to talk about Down Syndrome and help the Beavers learn some basic Makaton. The group really embraced the challenge and quickly picked up how to sign their names. They especially enjoyed learning useful phrases—although leaders may need to be cautious, as “cake please” has already become a firm favourite!
As part of the celebrations, the Beavers also took part in a sunflower planting activity, giving them something special to take home and nurture. The session encouraged not only learning but also responsibility and care.
To round off the evening, the Beavers proudly showed off their colourful odd socks to a very special guest who had come along to see what they had been up to. The socks were a great way to highlight the message of World Down Syndrome Day—celebrating differences and promoting inclusion.
It was a fantastic evening filled with learning, creativity, and plenty of smiles. Well done to all the Beavers for their enthusiasm and a big thank you to Beth for such an inspiring visit.
