Background to the Learning Scheme
Adult volunteers are central to Scouting, and we hope you find the experience just as rewarding as the time and energy you contribute. Scouting is not only focused on the growth of young people—it also supports the personal development of the adults who make the Movement possible.
To help every volunteer thrive, the Scout Association offers a comprehensive learning programme designed to strengthen existing skills, build new capabilities, and recognise commitment through a range of awards for training achievement and exceptional service.
Across all Districts, the County oversees the Scout Association’s Adult Learning Scheme, ensuring that leaders, managers, supporters, and all other volunteers receive consistent guidance and support.
Getting started
Growing Roots is the essential learning you’ll complete within your first six months as a new volunteer, with Safety and Safeguarding required in your first 30 days. This training introduces the fundamentals of Scouts, including safety, data protection, and how to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone. Further information is available here.
Mandatory ongoing learning
Safeguarding and Safety ongoing learning modules are available online as e-learning.
To access them, simply sign in to scouts.org.uk and visit ‘My Learning’. There, you can view all available training, check which learning you are required to complete, explore additional modules that may interest you, request an assessment, and track your progress over time.
Validation
Once you have completed the learning for a given module as part of the Adult Training Scheme you need to validate that learning, through discussion with our Local Volunteer Development Team. To do this email training@darlingtonscouts.org.uk
